53rd Annual Grier Heights Community Parade

The Grier Heights Community will be celebrating our 53rd Annual Labor Day Reunion and 132 years as a neighborhood.  This year’s theme will be ‘Continuing a Legacy, Honoring Our History and Community.’

The Grier Heights Community began when ex-slave Sam Billings purchased 100 acres of land, which is the first recorded time that an African American bought land in Charlotte. Following this purchase there was a need for a school to educate the children, so community members raised funds and received a Rosenwald grant to start the school. Today, Billingsville Elementary bears his name, and the restored school, which is now the Grier Heights Community Center, is home to various programs that promote quality education and work and economic growth and industry. These programs include, but are not limited to: early literacy, afterschool tutoring, adult literacy and basic education, job/work readiness, financial literacy, entrepreneurship for teens and digital literacy.

The reunion event will attract over 800 attendees. It will be held in the Grier Heights Community Park located at 3110 Leroy Street, where we will host a community history exhibit, kids zone, exhibitors, entertainment, food and tons of fun!!!!

To help celebrate our rich history, we would like to solicit donations of products, supplies, financial donation and/or your participation. Your donation would be greatly appreciated and your organization is welcome to set up a table for this event. The tax id is 20-5213469. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Vice President Tijua Robinson, 980-498-1487,  or President Stacey Brown, ghcioinc@gmail.com, 202-271-8148.

Thank you,
